VICTORIA – The Province will spend close to $400,000 this year for expectant mothers in need and their babies, Minister of Human Resources Susan Brice announced today.
“We know healthy moms lead to healthy kids,” said Brice. “Increasing support to women in need during their pregnancy means we’re giving their babies a good start.”
Effective May 1, 2005, the Ministry of Human Resources will increase its monthly Natal Supplement from $35 to $45 each month to provide better pre-and post-natal nutrition and support for healthier mothers and babies. The supplement is provided to pregnant women on income assistance and families with infants up to seven months. It may be used to purchase items such as nutritious food as well as clothing and baby equipment.
The Ministry of Human Resources is also providing enriched infant formula for dependent children under 12 months of age where a medical condition requires the use of specialized formula or there is a risk of contracting a disease transmissible through the mother’s breast milk.
“It’s because we’ve rebuilt B.C.’s economy and put our fiscal house in order that we’re able to provide supports like these that make a healthy difference in the lives of British Columbians,” said Brice. “We’re pleased to be able to offer parents on assistance extra support as they welcome their new babies.”
This funding boost is one of a number of new government measures improving the health and well being of British Columbia’s children including:
·
$73 million over three years to
provide universal hearing, dental and vision screening for babies and
preschoolers in B.C.
·
$47
million over three years to improve access to dental treatment for children and
low-income families.
· $800,000 in enhanced optical coverage for children and low-income families.
