356 HYBRID VEHICLES ADDED TO PROVINCE’S GREEN FLEET

VICTORIA – The Province is leading by example with the addition of up to 356 gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles to the government fleet, reflecting the throne speech goal of establishing B.C. as the global leader in sustainable environmental management, Premier Gordon Campbell announced today.

“Adding more hybrid vehicles to the government fleet is a practical and effective example of how we can use proven, existing technology to help improve air quality and meet our environmental goals,” said Campbell. “The greening of the provincial fleet is one more opportunity to show the world in 2010 that British Columbians are leaders in our commitment to sustainable transportation and providing a cleaner, healthier environment for generations to come.”

“As minister responsible for the provincial fleet, I want to ensure that government purchases are made based on the principles of sustainable environmental management,” Management Services Minister Joyce Murray said. “This acquisition will result in a direct and immediate reduction in green house gases from fleet operations. Our goal is to have 30 per cent of our overall fleet made up of green vehicles in the next three years.”

Approximately 15 per cent of the provincial government fleet consists of green vehicles, including 45 gasoline-electric hybrids as well as natural gas and propane powered vehicles. The additional hybrids will be used as part of the provincial fleet in communities across the province, including Victoria, Vancouver, Kamloops, Kelowna, Trail, Prince George and others.

“The Fraser Basin Council wholeheartedly endorses the decision by the Province to green its fleet with hybrid vehicles,” said David Marshall, executive director of the council, which also oversees the Fleet Challenge BC program. “A vibrant economy coupled with a healthy environment is key to supporting social wellbeing in B.C.”

The Province also announced in its recent budget tax relief for British Columbians who want to buy hybrid vehicles. Those who purchase cleaner-running hybrid passenger vehicles will save up to $2,000 in PST. The benefit is now in effect, and will remain in place until March 31, 2008.
