HAZELTON – The Gitksan Government Commission is receiving
$25,000 from the Province to provide call centre training in the community of
Hazelton (Gitanmaax), Bulkley Valley-Stikine MLA Dennis MacKay announced today.
“This means jobs for young, unemployed Gitksan and it allows them to
take an active role in bridging the digital divide,” MacKay said. “They will be
trained to supply help desk technical support to the community-led last-mile
projects. This project not only helps bridge the digital divide, it is also a
boost to our local economy.”
Goals of the Gitksan project include:
“The use of technology is widespread
and the next few years are critical for First Nations and rural communities as
we move to catch up to urban centres,” Jamie Sterritt, manager of IT services
for the Gitksan Government Commission said. “This improvement creates changes
in the way we do things and creates opportunities for training and capacity
development of community members in an emerging field. This funding ensures
that the Gitksan make use of these opportunities.”
The money comes from NetWork BC, the provincial government program in
the Ministry of Management Services tasked with bridging the digital divide by
2006.
